When We Were Kings

Pete Michaels

Dirt roads and BMX bikes just a hanging out with my friends
Goin’ back to school seemed a million years away

Summertime in a small town days and night without end
Lord I’d give anything to go back to those days

Layin’ down by the railroad tracks swimmin’ in Saint Johns river
Lying in the sun not doing anything

They were the best times of my life and that’s a fact things couldn’t get any better
Back in the day when we were kings

Backyard baseball and football games summer recreation fieldtrip days
Camping in the woods at the end of the street

It was the Beresford gang against the world you better believe they saw us comin’
We were the craziest bunch of kids they’d ever seen

We were young and dumb and invincible we were junior Evil Knivel’s
Building homemade ramps and jumpin’ everything

If you took a hit you just walk it off it was the way we lived our lives
Back in the day when we were kings

Solo

No cell phones, no way to be found, stayin out till the sun went down
I can’t forget growing up in my hometown

I’m a Deland boy, born and breed with those days of youth always in my head
Those years made me into who I am today

Gettin’ mumps and scrapes and skinned up knees sneaking out at night and playing hide and seek
I still can hear the whippoorwills and crickets sing

That time in life will never come again when the world revolves around your friends
Back in the days when we were kings

I love those days when we were kings
